Allegany Soccer Alliance (ASA) is a Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) recognized affiliate. ASA has been in the Allegany County area for many years, but has mainly served its purpose as the method to roster a team to take out of this area to play in tournaments. ASA has been kept alive by many volunteers to be able to serve this need. It was used by many teams in varying capacities: high school groups, “all-star” groups, etc.

Recently, ASA has gained new direction and been revived to serve a greater purpose in Allegany County and the surrounding areas. Mark and Laurie Deckers knew of two younger individuals, Ryan Gottier and Adam Sommers, who were constantly discussing the need for a soccer club. Both talked about the need for the structure and the availability to all, with the goal to get the area’s best players together to train with each other and constantly push the level of play. The Deckers got Ryan and Adam together in the Fall of 2012, and the brainstorming and planning began. This group immediately did everything to be recognized by MSYSA as the new board.

Shortly after the planning process, ASA was ready to host their first tryouts in the Spring of 2013 in hopes to have their first teams for that upcoming Spring and Summer. They originally only offered three teams: U18 Girls, U18 Boys, and U16 Boys. The turnout was great and they were able to fully roster all three teams. The first season was full of learning experiences for all, and creating a foundation to build upon.

ASA believes this club system will further push area soccer, and hopefully gain recognition and respect, which seems to be overlooked of this area. The goal is to continually be able to offer multiple age groups, and possibly even grow to having multiple teams at age groups. This will create competition within the teams to push the players’ skills and soccer knowledge. There is a goal to have a core group of players move up through the age levels together and have a competitive and skilled team. Development is the focus for ASA, not wins and losses – the result being a talented and competitive team due to development being the top priority.
