ANNOUNCEMENTS



2016 ASA Coaches
ASA is proud to announce the head coaches for the upcoming 2016 season. Listed below are the coaches and a short bio about each of them. We are very excited about these coaches, and believe they will help develop the youth players and are passionate about the game.

      U18 Boys: Kyle Bennett
Kyle Bennett will be coaching the U18 boys. Kyle is a 2009 graduate of Mountain Ridge high school. During his two years on the varsity team, they lost a total of four games. This will be Kyleís first coaching experience, but is noted for his knowledge and passion for the game. He writes about the beautiful game (and other sports) at the Cumberland Times-News and various other online media outlets. As a coach, he hopes to make every player better, both on a knowledge and skill level, increase confidence and create a fun and learning atmosphere.

      U16 Boys: Adam Sommers
Adam Sommers enters his 4th season as the u16 Boys Head Coach. His coaching tenure is also matched by serving on ASA's board the past 4 years either as Vice President or as President. Adam is very passionate about the beautiful game and hopes to pass along that passion to younger generations. His other coaching expierence came when he moved back to Frostburg, and was an assistant coach at Mountain Ridge. During his three seasons with Mtn.Ridge, the varsity boys won back-to-back State Championships. His playing career start at Beall High School where he played on varsity for 3 years, 2 of them as a starter. Sommers was part of a State Championship winning team during his junior year. He was named to the All Area First Team his senior and junior year, and the All Area Second Team his sophomore year. Sommers continued his career at McDaniel College. He played all 4 years and was co-captain his senior year. He hopes to help young players develop, and hopes that his playing experiences can aide in this development.


      U16 Girls: Kierstin Stevenson
Kierstin was a 4 year starter locally at Frostburg State University. During her time at Frostburg she was named All Conference Team Honorable Mention, Second Team All Conference, and won the Sportsmanship Award as a midfielder. She has had the opportunity to coach and assist at numerous summer camps hosted by FSU as well as coaching/assisting on several youth league teams throughout the area. She is a graduate of Beall High School where she was named First Team All Area and Player of the Year her senior season. She is excited for the opportunity to help young girls take their soccer skills to a higher level in order to promote better overall area play and increase chances of individuals obtaining college scholarships. Kierstin is a 2011 graduate of Frostburg State University with a degree focusing in athletic training as well as a 2014 graduate of Shenandoah University's Doctorate of Physical Therapy program.

      U14 Boys: Kevin McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy enters his third season as the top assistant coach with the Frostburg State University menís soccer team in 2015. Last fall, the Bobcats finished 10-6-3 overall and finished second in the country in save percentage (.909), fifth in team goals against average (.45) and 16th in shutout percentage (.58). FSU finished with 11 shutouts on the season and advanced to the CAC Tournament. In 2013, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU Tournament, both for the third-straight season. McCarthy arrived at FSU after several coaching stints at the collegiate level. In 2012, McCarthy served as the menís and womenís assistant coach at Ave Maria University. Prior to his stop in south Florida, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College from 2011-12. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the womenís soccer team. While at Ave Maria, McCarthy also served as the head coach of the Florida Fire Juniors, an under 11 boys soccer team. A May í11 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). McCarthy received his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma in January 2013.

      U12 Boys: Aaron Clark
Aaron is a 31 year old native of Cumberland, Maryland. He started playing soccer at age 5 in JCP in LaVale. He has continued to play soccer in some form or another from that point until today. He played through all age levels in the area through graduation from Allegany in 2001. During his time in high school, he was on the first edition of Allegany Soccer Alliance. The summer after high school, he played in the Haarlem Cup in the Netherlands with the People to People organization. Upon returning from that experience, he enrolled at Allegany College of Maryland and played for the Trojans soccer team. He completed one year with Allegany College and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Since returning from the Army, he has become increasingly interested in coaching soccer. He has coached for 2 years at the U12 level in AYSO. He has also coached at the U8 level.

      U10 Boys: John McCutcheon
John McCutcheon will be coaching the U-10 team. He has 14 seasons of experience coaching youth soccer. He is certified through AYSO, US Youth Soccer and the state of Maryland. During this time he has served as coaching director as well as President of a league. John believes whole heartedly in the mission of ASA. He intends to do everything in his power to make this mission a reality. John considers the U-10 level as the "learning to train stage". Although he intends to have a competitive team, wins and losses will not be the only thing that he measures the teams success with. He will emphasize the importance of individual skill development and creativity. Fundamentals will be a top priority along with making sure the kids are having fun and promoting confidence as well as teaching them to respect the game. His ultimate goal is to develop complete players that he will help reach their full potential.
